Upper Box

Upper Box

The Piedra River is located between Pagosa Springs and Durango.  The trips starts close to the headwaters as a little creek and is quite technical, with lots of maneuvering.  As you proceed down the river there are more tributaries joining the river causing the water volume to increase, so the rapids get bigger as you raft down.  The trip ends with the big splashes and drops of sampler Class IV. There is spectacular alpine forest scenery and wildlife. The river is very pristine with its limited access. It has been highlighted in Outside magazine and is highly regulated by the Forest Service so very few people are allowed into this canyon.

Guests will be paddling through a 1000 ft. canyon, alpine rain forests and heart pounding whitewater. The Piedra is a pool drop river, which means that there is a calmer pool of water at the bottom of the rapid. There are Class II, III, IV and IV+(or V depending on water level) rapids. This stunning river has more distinct drops than the Upper Animas since they are more defined and not continuous. Your heart will pump in the stair step drops, but you will also have a chance to reflect and view the scenery as you splash through calmer rapids. We have lunch at the natural hot springs along the river with time for a riverside soak. This trip has been highlighted in Outside Magazine. This river is highly regulated by the Forest Service so very few are allowed to enter on commercial trips. This maintains it’s wilderness designation and pristineness.
